Ōtautahi Christchurch

Aotearoa’s newest city – eat, stay and play to experience the magic of Ōtautahi Christchurch.

From 19 – 30 June, Doc Edge is delighted to host the Doc Edge Festival, a cultural event in the Asia Pacific region, positioning Ōtautahi Christchurch as the hub for all things documentary.

So, let’s introduce to you Ōtautahi Christchurch, a rejuvenated urban centre with modern architecture, compact walkable vibrant city with exciting foodie precincts,  relaxing green spaces and a mix of heritage and culture at every corner.

CRUISE AROUND THE CITY

As a relatively flat city, Christchurch is the perfect place to explore by foot or bike.  It also makes for a great way to find your bearings in an unfamiliar place and experience the city up close and personal.  Learn about the city’s fascinating history and venture into some of the city’s best spots.  As another transport alternative hop on board the Christchurch Tram! The Trams offer a unique experience combining history and sightseeing.  Explore Christchurch’s evolving city centre by tramcar: the all-day hop-on hop-off tickets allow you to visit the best of the central city sights at your leisure.

COFFEE AND BRUNCH

A good day in a new city starts with breakfast, so pop into one of Christchurch’s many cafes for a bite to eat and some caffeine to fuel your adventures. If you are staying in the central city, you are spoilt for choice at the options for delicious meals and great coffee. Many are within walking distance from central, and favourites include Riverside Market, Miro, Westend Stories, Akin, Child Sister and C1. Other great options that are a little further out include Hello Sunday, Little Poms and Gentle Giant.

EMBRACE MĀORI CULTURE AND HISTORY

Amiki Tours is worth checking out. Your friendly, knowledgeable guide will take you on a cultural food tour through the laneways of Ōtautahi Christchurch as you discover unique foods, local stories and historical sites. Learn some te reo Māori and link up with locals to uncover some of the city’s hidden gems!

WORLD CLASS DINING

Christchurch has an exquisite culinary scene, with the evening dining options ranging from sophisticated restaurants, cosy pubs and rooftop bars to casual dining alfresco style. Head to The Terrace, set along the Avon River, where you’ll find many of the city’s best eateries and bars. Have a delicious Italian dinner at Original Sin, tasty bites at Delilah or some classy drinks at cocktail bar Kong.  With its colourful, Spanish Mission style architecture, New Regent Street also boasts an abundance of unique restaurants, vibrant bars and indulgent dessert spots.  Go for fine dining or more casual eats, head to Riverside Market, you could sip away at whiskey lounge The Last Word or head straight for something sweet at Rollickin Gelato. If you nab a table outside you might even catch the tram running down the middle of the street.

DISCOVER CANTERBURY’S WINE REGION

A visit to Tussock Hill is a perfect city fringe winery experience and is a short drive from the CBD. Nestled on the rocky slopes of the Port Hills overlooking Christchurch City, Tussock Hill produces high quality organic wines. The Cellar Door Restaurant serves a delicious selection of seasonal sharing plates that highlight local Canterbury produce, making this spot a must visit!

It’s time to get up close and personal with some of New Zealand’s most diverse and unique wine. Located in the heart of North Canterbury, the Waipara wine region is home to over 90 vineyards, most of them independently owned by a close-knit community of local families. Wine lovers are spoilt for choice in this small but mighty region and what better way to experience it than with a wine trail tour? Most tours also include options for a beautiful lunch at one of the cellar doors, and multiple winery stops with tastings along the way.
