The Long Season

Netherlands | 2017 | 90 min | Arabic | Leonard Retel Helmrich

Nine million Syrians have left their homeland since the outbreak of war. Many have ended up in camps like Madjal Anjar in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley, set up by seasonal workers from Raqqa who were unable to return when their city was taken over by ISIS.

School classes, a wedding day celebration and family battles combine to offer a sense of fragile normality within this community. People wait for the bus to bring goods and news from Raqqa.

Multi-award-winning director Leonard Retel Helmrich uses his hallmark single-shot cinema verité style (on which he gave a masterclass at the 2007 DOC NZ Forum) to probe deeply into life in the camp, bringing home the human drama behind the abstract number of nine million.
