The Invisible Heart

Canada | 2018 | 80 min | English | Nadine Pequeneza

Three centuries after economist and philosopher Adam Smith coined the term “the invisible hand” to describe the self-regulating nature of markets, The Invisible Heart tracks the birth of Social Impact Bonds (SIBs) — an investment product designed to raise private capital to pay for social services.

Backed by the Rockefeller Foundation and the world’s biggest investment bank, Goldman Sachs, SIBs now operate in over 20 countries and have made for strange bedfellows: social workers and Wall Street bankers, the homeless and venture capitalists, conservative and liberal politicians.

Nadine Pequeneza’s film explores an unorthodox marriage between capitalism and charity. From the halls of power to the struggling underclass, we follow an unusual cast of characters as they attempt to tackle everything from academic failure to homelessness and crime.

Filmmaker Nadine Pequeneza will attend the Festival with the support of the High Commission of Canada and Heart of the City
