“A heart-soaring tearjerker.”

Heddy Honigmann has developed and refined her style over many documentaries in her 30+ year career. Buddy again teams her with long-time collaborator, composer Florencia di Concilio, to deliver a poignant and carefully-composed portrait of six guide dogs and their companions.

Are the relationships built on love, or loyalty, or are they simply working relationships?

“I think the word ‘love’ is appropriate,” answers one visually-impaired man. “But it’s still a dog. And I’m still a human.”

“Honigmann gets right down to the matter of emotional connection in just a shot or two.”
New York Times

Heddy questions the dogs’ owners in her characteristic way – respectfully, and with genuine concern rooted in a deep trust – about what their animals mean to them.

The result is an ode to the fighting spirit of the owners, and a loving portrait of the deep bond between humans and almost-humans.

Honigmann’s feature Oblivion, about the city of her birth, screened in a previous edition of Doc Edge. Heddy Honigmann was named Doc Edge Superhero at the Doc Edge Awards 2019.
